Devotions (Kinda) Acts 4: 1-13-2/11/24

Hello. I’m back! Hopefully I won’t go away again. This is like an unusual home now, haha!

Before I get back into this new feature I am sorry and have to admit something.

This technically isn’t a “devotion” per se, but I wanted to share what I want to say about this. This is sort of based on a bible study I just went to at an earlier time. As a group we went over things our own way at the time but there was some stuff here that really interested me.

Keep reading and I hope you will understand. What I do want to share doesn’t have a lot to do with what was talked about but is on the scripture itself. Because sometimes when reading the bible the word just comes alive and is exciting!

Things hit me deep and that is what I want to now share. The most exciting thing about reading Acts is know the Who, What, When, and Where?

To know where it happened you would have to know the who was impacted and when which was after a time of Christ’s life.

In this case these situations were after His death and resurrection!

Preceding that Jesus said to the people, the vast groups who listened before He died, He said He would give people a special gift. It would be something that would help them, a helper (the holy spirit) and it would be with them. It was technically Jesus’ promise to be with His people forever.

The disciples sadly and also preceding the book of the bible I am talking about did not understand much of this then and were not knowing what He had promised them before (they basically assumed, “You said you would be walking with us for the rest of our lives. Why are you doing this???”).

Then Jesus gave His life for the sin of the world died for the world’s sin. Then He was resurrected and is living actively for His people, like today!

The exciting thing about Acts is that the holy spirit would be coming to be a “helper” to them?

Wait. The “holy spirit?” What on earth is that??

Well that very force of God’s glory is told right here in this very book of the bible! You would if you get into it read of how it impacted them, both the jews and the gentiles, for the very first time. You also will be surprised that though preceding this event the were facing such heavy persecution and were seen as going against what the scriptures were saying. But they were actually living out what the God of love wanted especially the ones closest to Jesus.

I hope you get to read it during your time of devotion and chance on what fun it is. It is encouraging, at that time it was “unprecedented” (I sort of hate that word though, haha!!) and it was a special time too. That is because they faced challenges that they did not know were things they had to face. And everyone was on a new journey, even the living disciples of Christ (after Judas’ death). They faced a “new” path that was torn by new problems and trials because it was no longer the Pharisees that were after them but now a group called the “Sadducees.”

What I want to get into is are you a religious nut? Or do you consider yourself more than religious? Maybe you see yourself as a person who knows the truth and everyone else is wrong!

Well maybe reading this book of the bible will help you on your own time and during this moment of your life.

The first verse to the fourth verse talks about the arrest of Peter and John. Major religious leaders got together and as a group swooped in and captured them, since they talked of things that they apparently thought were false. It was heresy in their eyes!

What they didn’t realize was that they were witnesses to one of the most amazing events in all of human history. One that no one else can do but Christ!

But the Sadducees and the others thought they were spreading lies. They claimed they saw Jesus after He died. How???

It was word of mouth that spread to many others. How dare they speak what others would claim of their own offense some sort of false doctrine?

Seems like the Sadducees in a nutshell (I guess lol!).

But they were taken in to custody during the evening and kept in some sort of jail overnight.

Then they made them speak to a group of judges as if they were on trial to many others. Their claims were now getting them either killed or I don’t know what but these groups took their word as the most serious stuff to ever come from their mouths.

They were called the Sanhedrin.

As this went on Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said:

“(He was filled with the holy spirit) Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

part of Acts 4:8-12 NKJV (parentheses replaced text, added)

Hmm.

What a witness. But there’s more.

I am not even getting to the biggee part. This is the climax of my little devotion text I want you to read. What was so amazing was that they were put on trial.

Ever been on trial yourself? I haven’t but I have seen it at least once and I do not want to be on the worst part of that situation.

Here they were taken that what they said was untrue to the leaders, the priests, the head captain, and the Sadducees because they were speaking things they thought were awful.

But the final verse was what hit me.

They realized that the people who were so gungho so seemingly passionate, so sure about what they “saw.” It must have been true!

Because God’s people here, Peter and John, were known to be not smart.

They were known as uneducated people yet they were so sure they saw Christ.

And they believed. That is how verse 13 ends.

Wow.

Sorry I want to ponder that some more. How amazing it is to be a witness for Jesus!

But how about you? What do you believe? Seriously?

Do you see yourself as a witness? How about just a Christian? I know sometimes being seen as one thing or another might seem like one needs extra bravery or maybe you think this kind of thing is intimidating, do not fear. Do not forget that no matter what God is with you. That “helper” the holy spirit is with you.

God loves you. Take care.

Do Not Fear or Worry- 8/4/21

Why is it so easy to take our eyes off of God? Either through sin or by sin in the forms of being afraid of things in life. We have some daily challenges but there is no reason to not trust in God because He wants to there for us!

We must not be afraid or have emotions that guard us from really trusting.

I just thought about Peter crossing the ocean during a terrible storm. He sees while he is on a boat out that Jesus is out walking on the water and after he walks on the water himself(!) he looks over at the waves and the horrors happening from the storm and falls into the ocean.

Jesus then has to rescue him.

Should we have to fear because of what we curently see in life?

Here is an extreme example.

In Mark 5 in the NKJV (New King James version) of the bible a man who runs a synagogue comes running up to Jesus knowing He has done miraculous things.

With a daughter who is dying he with desperation tells her to please lay healing hands on her. After Jesus is sidetracked by a different situation (a separate miracle) a man who lives with Jairus the one of the synagogue who lived with him informs him that his daughter has now died and he shouldn’t bother the “Teacher” any further.

Then this verse is as such:

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Mark 5:36

What troubling news when you go to a man who people say can heal others and the person you are worried about is passed away already.

But Jesus goes to the man’s house with a few of His disciples and then brings the daughter back to life!

That is a wonderful miracle tanks to God and Jesus who glorified His father.

We must never take our eyes off of God just because of things happening in our lives.

One other verse is more minor than the former part of the bible.

There Jesus tells the multitudes many things to follow His father. He spoke of the beatitudes and also things that they can struggle with and tells them about daily issues.

We must not be so bothered about tomorrow that we worry. I have worried about big stuff before but I also knew the truth so I shouldn’t have been so deeply afraid and emotional about it.

But here Jesus talked about being concerned of what to wear or food to take the next day.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34

As I said this one is not as big as the earlier story but it is important to our daily life.

It okay to be concerned about these things but not to be so bothered by it. If we worry to a point we take our eyes off of Jesus and lose trust.

And how can we then seek His way if we are so “afraid” about these little things?

We must live for Him and trust in Him fully. Hopefully people will see our example and will be led to follow Jesus as well.

God, glorify us and may we conform to Your will not our own or fleshly ways. May we learn not to worry or to be afraid and may we keep our eyes on Your ways and realize how much You are in control. Amen.

Feel 5/15/21

I don’t want to feel

like you aren’t there

even if you seem

far, I’ll run through Air

I don’t like to feel

like Job in the midst

of his counselors reel

he knew the truth of the mist

Your love is breath

like the kiss from an ocean

I can travel deep

there You are instead

Like a knight whose plight

is to save not just me

but all who need You

And I’m like the steed.

As the valleys widen

As the doubts make minds

careen far off places

only to crash to vines

Because when one thinks

there is mercy no matter

how far in space

once one seeks forgiveness there is love finding latter.

Further through the life

As far as can go

though men doubt my thoughts

they still must know-

that the servant’s heart

must seek passion, Christ

Or else there’s deep death

and the pain seeks vice.

But there is a way

God I know with my heart

That my redeemer

lives, life creates a start

God I know to feel

never care of man’s traps

because You know MY HEART

that is on the map.

A hope to feel

Of what seems not there

But you’ve proved me again

And again your grace is flair

I can tell endless tales

can so feel Your presence

no matter what happens to me

is worth all That sentence.

God I want to know

that heart of Jesus

seek Him in the morning

His love as warm as night ceases.

God I don’t want to feel

that Your love doesn’t matter

You brought ones together

as the led ones gather.

God I hope You lead

as I’m lead by You

To take the stage

And say “God I feel You!”

Sin Undone-6/5/16

I have too much of a busy schedule, it feels like to me. I am grateful to work but sometimes I can’t even rest. I’ve got work on the weekends and plus at church I couldn’t even stay because of duties so I had to up and exit the sanctuary. I hope this all doesn’t overwhelm me! Sigh*~

Hello. I hope you have had a relaxing Memorial Day of reflection as well as just time off to have fun and enjoy life.

You know sometimes we take it for granted this thing called life. We think we have all the time in the world so we turn to back things that we were rescued from and get ourselves stuck into the “pit” again and again.

What is the “pit” you wonder? It is the trap that we sometimes ensnare for ourselves. At first it is temptation leading to giving in to the sin. But if we are not serious about repentance, the telling to God that we are sorry and we turn away and will go back to Him, we get ourselves led back into falling again.

Falling and getting out. Repeat.

That struggle can be so discouraging. A person I know unfortunately has turned that way and ended up not in this world anymore. It’s sad to see someone that knew the truth be in a situation that they did not want to leave.

But our sin sometimes gets us in a loop.

I’ve been in that “loop” many times. Saying “I’m sorry God, forgive me…” then doing that deed again.

Sometimes we may get deeper, knowing that we shouldn’t but that want to turn from God is just too good, like a piece of your favorite dessert.

Then you partake and realize you are not satisfied. You can never be satisfied.

Yet it is so seemingly enjoyable to get into again… we’ll think maybe this time we will get it right and it will be so “good”!

But it never is. Why is that?

Because we live in a fallen world and we desire something but the thing that was our first want was to sin. After the fall of the world through one man who had the responsibility to say no there was sin that entered the world.

And sin is evil!

It is the world: it is all bad, it is fallen, the reason we have death and so much bad in this place here on earth.

But if you know Christ, should you keep heading down this path? As in getting into tons of stuff you shouldn’t?

Paul has said something about that. Should we keep sinning harshly just because we have a savior to turn to that will have God forgive us?

Yes or no?

What do you think?

I think that we are free to do what we want but if we want to serve God we have to realize we should make more decisions for the Lord.

That means though our sin nature fights it at times, we have to look to God in all circumstances if we want to serve Him.

A servant of Jesus should not be turning to ways of the world as a daily ritual. That makes our hearts unclean when they should be filled by the Holy Spirit.

That makes us less like a lover of Christ and more like a person of solitude because of sins.

Or a person that just wants to neglect all that God’s will has for them and will be provided to them.

That means not looking to other ways for truth and instead keeping your eyes on the mount and our feet firmly on solid ground. The ground of the Rock, the solid place of Jesus Christ.

We can continue on and live with prospering lives if we deny ourselves and seek His will. But God still does want us to make our own choices.

We don’t have to do that because God wants us to follow Him. There is no way but Jesus. God’s word says: Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”

And Jesus made that way, did the penalty for us and our sin. He died on the cross, rose again, and lives in Heaven one day coming to do the final things this earth has yet to see.

Would you want your friends to fall into those days? I don’t think so. We should live as pure hearts of Jesus’ love, sacrifice our time, give our lives so that people would learn of the truth, and just be love to them.

Just showing love is the first step. How do you want to do it?

That is the one step where there is the undoing of sin. If your heart is clean because of forgiveness or because you show His love to others around you, what does that say to your life?

You are a new creation in Christ. Your old self died with Him on the cross. That person is now no longer a part of you… isn’t that exciting???

To have no more sin to account against you and make you dead to the world and to go to hell… because of Christ that is no longer a part of you.

Amen! We should share this news and love and mercy to others because He makes all things possible. And He will undo so much bad stuff in others lives as a result. It is His power. We must know that love can sweep it all away, move and change hearts, and give people a brand new purpose!

How sweet is that news?

Let’s as Christians (or if you are a new Christian or interested, message me on comments) see God undo the chains we sometimes let ourselves get shackled with and serve with lives pleasing to Him…

🙂

Freedom that Stands-5/30/16

This Memorial Day should be a time of remembering sacrifice but I also want to share some extra thoughts as well.

We should be grateful of the ones who fight for our country, the ones who lay down their lives everyday so that we could have freedom.

You know there is a television show that came out some decades ago and one of the stories touched my heart. On the show MASH there was a sequence where Radar and another person were observing women possibly slaves scanning a field for mines.

They didn’t like knowing that someone had ordered people who were human beings to go outside and use sticks to touch possible explosives that were hidden in the high grass.

Suddenly without warning a mine goes off and a woman drops. Radar, thinking and caring for her safety and not thinking of his own charges into the field as the other person shouts for him not to go out there.

He grabs her and carries her to where the other soldier is possibly going to get her medical treatment.

Now just typing that now I got really emotional again. I don’t get that way because I think a tv show is real (it’s just a dern piece of media, hehe!)… what gently moves my heart is that it is representative of the soldier.

They go far to help fellow brothers, or fellow soldiers even if their own safety is at stake. They’d drop onto the mine and let it detonate themselves just so their friends would be safe. They’d make the sacrifice that many of us today either take for granted or think of our own troubles which are small and petty sometimes versus what they still go through to this day.

We, wherever we come from, have a military that is fighting for freedom in your place, your country, your continent that you live in.

Fighting for freedom in your place” I hadn’t meant to say that. Now that reminds me of something else__:

God made a way by sending his son Jesus Christ to day in your place. Do you think this is just religion? No, sometimes we do things in a religious way but that is doing so in the wrong heart. Religion is false but a relationship with Jesus is true. It starts with our realization that God loves us, He wants us to know that He could save us because of what He had done and what His son had done which was die bodily on the cross and then in three days, rise again, bodily and wholly, and go to Heaven, ensuring us He is one day coming again.

Did you know that God loves you so much? You may be hurting but no matter what you are going through He still loves you. He makes you know that all He wants is for you to know Him. He wants a relationship with you. If you do, you will be blessed in ways this world will not understand but you will know in your heart what He has done.

There is mercy by what was done through the cross. His son took all of your and the world’s sin. He also bled on the cross which is why we needed our sins paid for and forgiven. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

He was like a lamb to be sacrificed but He was THE lamb, the ultimate and only sacrifice that would cover all sin.

God has made His people and they need to be saved because of sin. We all sinned and not one is innocent except Jesus who was and is man and God.

He redeemed the people who are willing to hear, would you want to know of Christ’s sacrifice?

Again drawing attention on Memorial day I have posted a pic on social media that has made me want to cry. I first saw it in high school, it is a painting, a portrait of a man standing at the Vietnam Memorial. His head is bowed and he is crying as he puts his hand on the wall full of the names of the people who died during that war.

In the reflection is a hand touching his. It is his younger self… and he and his fellow fallen troop are staring back at him.

It makes me cry and I know one person who served this country. He doesn’t seem to understand that I am moved by what the soldier has done for this country.

It seems he feels that a person has to serve the country to appreciate it. I myself have never served but I get emotional at their ultimate sacrifice.

I also was moved reading a book about C. S. Lewis. He has served his country and when he struggled with if God existed or not became bitter to the world. He later was changed by Christ and became one of the biggest defender and apologetics in the faith.

He also was used in sad situations, almost like men and women willing to be sacrificed in time as they’d know Jesus.

He was told to give a sermon to a huge team of pilots. As they explained the real reason he was surprised (he probably was going to cry at the thought). They were concerned for these pilots’ souls. They were more than likely about to head to their deaths (it was like a 90% chance of fatality for them) as they would head toward enemy territory, protecting their land at home. They would probably get hit by antagonistic warfare fighting for their side.

C. S. Lewis preached to these people. And God’s Word was not returned void.

So do you want to know of the Ultimate Sacrifice of Christ? He lived in a holy land and because of sin was ordered by the people (no different than us) to die on the cross for blaspheming that He was the King, the I Am. He was the king of the Jews but the Lord can also be lord of our hearts and our lives.

God would not want you to perish from sin and be separated from Him for all eternity. This life may not be our only one but it is critical if you have thoughts that are not right to what God wants for you.

God wants you to know He loves you. He provided the way and He can through His Son and provide the way in your life today.

Accept Christ. It is the best gift you could receive today.

Your sin can only get you one way, but Christ died for it so that you wouldn’t end up in that place called hell.

His death was for your life; his payment gave you the chance to be accepted into His kingdom. Pray and know the Lord today.

If you know the Lord then God says you are one of His people and He is your God. He loves you and I hope you experience His amazing grace, something He gives us that we do not deserve.

How exciting it is that He is your God?? You can stand in true spiritual freedom if it is so.

God bless you and meditate on the Lord this Memorial Day.

“These things I have spoken to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Quick Quip- No Greater Love

Has anyone seen that movie “First Sunday” with Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan? I love that film. It is so beautiful. That’s not because of it’s “preachy” message but that under its heart it shows the depths of God’s Love.

As the characters go through so much toil in looking for a job they give up and turn to crime.  Now what would you think? Do you think going to church the people there would look at them and go “What? They did what? They’re not allowed here!”

I’m kind of going away from the main conventions of the story but I’m trying to prove a point. The point is what the church, the people of believers in Christ do. Now they could turn people away that are like that but that is in their heart and their heart would be wrong in doing so.

These people show such love. This is not because being loving is a “good” thing but because the greater one in their lives changed their hearts and that is Jesus Christ.

God can do amazing things in the church, outside it, and just about anywhere! We just need to find in our hearts to seek the Kingdom of God His righteousness and He because of Jesus who died for us lead the way!

Stand Firm Now-10/14/14

These celebrations are crazy though I am learning of an alternative to Halloween. Hope people besides me learn more or start to about Harvest Day. It’s funny how our desire towards evil and sinful themes gets our interest during this time.

Where do you stand for Christ? Do you proclaim Him in front of witnesses? Do you share him in little nice little doses of goodness? Do you hear people making fun of ones of the faith and you want to ease off and hide in the corner?

Do you even witness of Jesus at all?

Whether you like to write, direct anything, be a doer (or want to be) of the Lord I hope that I will encourage you. We must all know that it is never wrong to share the faith of the one who loves us all dearly (even the so-called “enemies” and people around you) as even little tiny moments of witness will never go void.

Do you have known atheists in your life? Ask them gently why they feel that way while on a regular discussion and he starts to talk about evolution. Do you think a person is not telling the right truth? Tell your say but pray when you do so (you yourself may be wrong. That’s happened to me before and I didn’t talk to God for wisdom first).

Have you ever felt that you misrepresented God? Know that in all things God forgives you if you mean that you want it from Him to move on.

I do not know your heart.

But God does. And while He only wants us to be part of His life we must in mutual adoration and love serve Him in return. People need Jesus now more than ever because people are dying in fires, terrorist attacks, there is a threat to the USA by a group and people are afraid, they don’t know what they should do. And they have you for comfort.

Don’t you want to be there for them?

Paul spoke to his group in Ephesus from a jail. He was preaching the word and imprisoned for doing such an “offensive” act. He spoke to a people that were imperfect just like you or me or the many people on this earth yet to know God and He encouraged them for love.

The Love by Christ’s sacrifice as He was an example of the fullness of love itself.

Just as Christ died for Paul, he wanted to do whatever he could to tell his people the great truths from God, the Holy Spirit.

He told them to give up lying and speak to others truthfully. He said to not be angry and also to not sin.

Don’t go to bed angry. That is kinda what he’s sayin’ here. He says in NKJV verse 26 chapter 4 of Ephesians: “…do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.”

Ever been angry and had nothing to do with it? I have. We should not do that. We must in love if people are persecuting you or teasing your faith we should tell them sometimes that they are being cruel. But a bad thing to do would be to throw a book at the person or something!

It says we should not let Satan get a foothold on our “wrath.”

I say find something to do if you get mad at somebody’s statements so you don’t get discouraged. Write, read God’s Word and meditate on it, do something! Pray that God would take out the anger that was in your heart because we have to tell others about the Lord and flipping out or cursing at someone is not showing an example of a person with Jesus alive in their heart.

Paul told them they must not steal. Man, what was this church in Ephesus doing, on a side note?

Sorry back on track. They encouraged people to steal no longer but instead work for his hands and keep doing something good so that they might need to give in certain situations their hard-earned money.

What were you like before you knew Christ? Do you still do things in your heart to that effect and need to bring some unresolved sin to God? Jesus died for it. Let’s not sink in quick-sand by destroying the people around us in ways that are not right and don’t let people know we have light in our hearts.

And we should be slow in anger not retaliate! If people are consistent with teasing or picking on you over your faith just talk to them back. I don’t know what you are going through but these are just thoughts (hey- it’s a blog! ;P).

We should as people who make up churches be building each other up as well. Be kind to one another, treat each other with love and not sin against or with each other.

And back on track again, if you have ever been doing anything that is heart-breaking to God in public do the opposite. You are a follower of Christ! You love Him don’t you? We should all be kind and fervent examples but humble and serve like the Son of God.

We should not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. At first I misunderstood this but “grieving” is by the Holy Spirit’s perspective. It should not be grieving from something you are doing which is habitual sin, deliberate actions that are hurting God because you were made for something better.

Another reason to be refreshed by Christ’s mercy and example!

Do you stand on gardening soil, stuff that would sink in if you merely put your feet onto it? Is that why you can’t stand because you are only firmly on your own ideals and ideas?

Or maybe you stand on gold ground. Stuff that was man-made into seeming pure ore and makes you feel tough. You’ve got this! And there is no dern way you cannot survive. You made it, you got here on your own… but guess what?

It seems secure but it ain’t pure gold. It’s man-made.

It’s only temporary security that won’t add up to much when you stand on it on your own.

So stand on firm ground for Christ Jesus. May we share, love, give, and sacrifice minutes or hours, or sometimes days for His glory.

And don’t stand later. Stand now. His power in changing your life from the everyday into the day by day growth in Him can do amazing things beyond your or any of our comprehension.

On Christ alone wonders will happen. Trust in Him today and be a cause for Christ.
